The Glowing Sky Orb is such a simple little project it just
begs for an upgrade. It will likely take the price tag up a little unless you
have some spar parts but it is worth it.
Glow sticks work well with the Glowing Sky Orb and give
color options that are nice yet somewhat unpredictable. You can brighten the
orb up by exchanging the glow stick for a high output LED light and battery.
When this was tested, the orb was not only brighter but the battery and LED
weigh in at less that the glow bracelet found to be a bit heavy for the 9 inch
helium balloon. The real test will be on Halloween night with three different
Orbs running at the same time.
Additional parts you will need for this mod are a bright LED,
a Lithium button cell battery and some shipping tape.
The LED: not just any LED will do for this. Bright LEDs such
as the ones found in LED keychain flashlights are the ones we are looking for.
You can get them in white, red, green or even ones that flash at your local
Radio Shack with the rest of the small parts. If you have an LED keychain
flashlight to take apart, you have the battery and Led taken care of. I found
one at Big Lots just over a week ago for $1. In the image you’ll the wire that
needs to be on the positive side of the battery, just look on inside the LED
and you see the difference. If you get it backwards, the led will not
light.
The Battery: The parts
shown here were the ones weighed against the glow bracelet and the battery used
will probably make the biggest difference in weight. This one was a CR2032 if
you want to compare sizes in the store.

Here, the led was just placed on the battery to make sure
everything was working. Shipping tape was used to hold the leads on securely
prior to inserting it into the balloon. In the second image you can see the
shipping tape holding the connection and trimmed. Shipping tape was used
because it is light and sticks well for inserting into the balloon. This will
also ensure any sharp edges are covered that may punch a hole in the balloon.
Insert the lit LED and battery into the deflated balloon. It
can be a bit tight around the mouth of the balloon but the flexible balloon can
handle some stretching.

Last thing is to inflate the balloon with helium the same as
with you would the Glow Stick version and tie it off. Attach your string and you’re
done. The image shown is a white 9 inch balloon with a red LED and clear case.
White LEDs are easy to find and will make your orb glow the color of the
balloon. So if you want a specific color in mind; that just got a little
simpler.
